Did Katy Perry Announce Her Pregnancy?

Last night Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding played to a sold-out crowd at the Madison Square Garden. This morning while scouring tweets written during the performance for our Twitter Twitter Review, we came across some “interesting” news. Early in the evening @JimmyEverett commented on the size of Perry’s belly. At this point nothing is confirmed, but @Jelipe88 stated later that during Katy Perry’s performance she announced she was pregnant.

Katy Perry Pregnant MSG

Clearly, this is not hard evidence–but it’s certainly compelling. Over the last few weeks, several sources have reported about perceived changes in Perry’s figure. We sent Katy Perry an inquiry on Twitter. We’ll report back when we know more.

Do you think Katy Perry is pregnant? Were you at the performance and have any extra details that we can use to update this article?

Patti LaBelle

LaBelle performing at the Alpha Kappa Alpha Centennial Celebration in July 2008.

Well known for her gorgeous voice, R&B singer Patti LaBelle will now apparently be well known for her temper too. A lawsuit filed this past Monday by Rosanna Monk and her husband Kevin states that she and her 18-month-old child were attacked by LaBelle in November 2010. It seems the whole event happened inside a Manhattan apartment house where LaBelle was staying while she starred in “Fela!” on Broadway.

Reportedly, the 18-month-old toddler was running around the building’s lobby when LaBelle, wearing a fur coat and big sunglasses, walked up behind Mrs. Monk and said something like, “‘What are you doing letting your kid run around like that?’

At that time, Mrs. Monk went to pick up her child when LaBelle went into a rage, screaming obscenities and flicking water on the two from a water bottle. The frightened toddler then proceeded to cry and got so upset that she vomited.

In an effort to leave the scene, Mrs. Monk and her daughter left the building and proceeded to walk to their car. However, along the way the mother said, “Look what you did to my daughter.” This then sent the Grammy award winning singer into another rage where she tried to punch the mother. LaBelle would have probably succeeded in hitting the mother had it not been for her own bodyguard stopping her.

Ms. Monk called the police at the time of the incident, but an arrest was not made at the time. She then mailed a letter to LaBelle’s management asking for an apology, but never received one.

Although the Monk’s realize that the damages are pretty minor overall, they would just like to see LaBelle take responsibility for her actions. They say that if they win their lawsuit all of the proceeds would be donated to a children’s cancer charity. Seems like a good way to teach their daughter and Patti LaBelle a lesson while also benefiting others at the same time.

Well, seems like I am not the only one who dislikes the Insane Clown Posse (ICP) and their fans, or Juggalos. Seems the FBI has recently classified Juggalos as a “loosely-organised hybrid gang,” citing the group’s violence, criminal activity and “gang-like behaviour”. According to the FBI’s 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment report, Juggalos are described the following way:

“Open source reporting suggests that a small number of Juggalos are forming more organised subsets and engaging in more gang-like criminal activity…. Transient, criminal Juggalo groups pose a threat to communities due to the potential for violence, drug use/sales, and their general destructive and violent nature.”

Fans of the Insane Clown Posse have called themselves Juggalos for more than two decades, developing a reputation for face-paint and Faygo soda. They name themselves after the ICP song, “The Juggla,” and the Detroit-based rappers organize the annual Gathering of the Juggalos, which attracts more than 20,000 fans. I wonder how many FBI agents will be at the next Gathering.

Pete Townshend, the legendary guitarist and frontman for the classic rock band, The Who, slammed Apple’s iTunes at the beginning of this month, calling them a “digital vampire.” Speaking in Manchester in northwest England, Townshend called on the online music giant to do more to assist the artists from whom they are making so much money from. Townshend was quoted as stating the following:

“Is there really any good reason why, just because iTunes exists in the wild west Internet land of Facebook and Twitter, it can’t provide some aspect of these services to the artists whose work it bleeds like a digital vampire… for its enormous commission?”

He went on to describe how record labels and publishers had provided a range of services to artists, offering editorial guidance and how they would nurture artists creatively in the past. He did offer a possible solution though. He stated that he he feels Apple should hire 20 talent scouts “from the dying record business” to help new acts and provide financial and marketing support to the best of them.

Although I do feel that this is a great idea on one hand, I do not think that it would be a smart move for Apple overall. I feel that by doing so, Apple would open themselves up to a whole new industry that they know nothing about. Right now, they are riding a fine line, but they are still very much a computer company and not a music company. I say keep it that way and let’s try to find better ways of incorporating Apple’s iTunes into the music industry’s overall model. What are your thoughts?

Adele

Adele performing live in 2009

Adele‘s voice has been a huge success for her this year with her album, “21” being the best selling CD in the United States with over 4 million units sold. Her voice has also been a huge amount of trouble for her as well.

In June she had to cancel concerts due to laryngitis. Then, in early October, she canceled a run of U.S. concerts due to a repeated vocal chord hemorrhage. At that time she wrote to her fans:

“If I continue to pick up everything before I have properly conquered these problems and nipped them in the bud, I will be totally and utterly fucked. Singing is literally my life, it’s my hobby, my love, my freedom and now my job. I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voice forever.”

Unfortunately, her vocal problems persisted, and now, according to Rolling Stone Magazine, she will need to go under the knife to fix the problem. Hopefully there is not too much to fear though. The surgery is supposed to be pretty non-invasive, and it has also helped other singers such as Steven Tyler, Graham Nash and Elton John in the past. So, hopefully Adele will be back out on the road doing what she loves once again very soon.

We wish you the best recovery, Adele!

This past Tuesday, Steven Tyler was rushed to a hospital in Paraguay where he underwent treatment for a busted lip, cut forehead, and two broken front teeth. Steven has been in South America with Aerosmith on a tour where they have broken house attendance records. Although there has been some speculation that Steven has fallen off the wagon and has started drinking again, he assures everyone that his fall was just a result of dehydration from food poisoning. As Steven says:

“Frankly, I just passed out. I was in the shower and I got nauseous and I started to get sick and I just fell on my face. I just passed out and woke up with the water on.”

The guy is a performer though… Even with his busted lip and broken teeth, he still managed to play the harmonica at following shows.

Todd Shaw, aka Too $hort, has been accused of grabbing a woman’s breasts at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in San Francisco on March 6. Kenya Winston claims that Too $hort made vulgar comments to her before reaching down from the stage and grabbing her breasts. She filed a police report four days after the incident, but no charges were brought against him at that time. She then contacted her attorneys soon after, and they filed a sexual battery lawsuit on her behalf. According to Daniel Dean, her attorney:

“Ms. Winston is a hardworking mother who just wanted to treat herself to a fun night out. What Too $hort did was reprehensible and our goal is to hold him accountable…. We understand Too $hort, he’s a rapper and a lot of his lyrics are vulgar and what he says onstage is vulgar. Those are his First Amendment rights. But to reach down and grab someone’s breasts?”

Joshua Binder, an attorney for Too $hort, refused to comment on the lawsuit.

Anyone remember the feds raiding the Gibson Guitar factories in Memphis and Nashville this past August? Well, they did, and between those raids and other raids in 2009; the feds have seized over $1 million worth of rosewood, ebony, and finished guitars from Gibson. These hardwoods are prized for their tonal properties and strength and are used for Gibson’s fretboards on their guitars. Gibson’s factories have remained open, but have done so under great difficulty due to the fact that the feds took most of the company’s raw materials.

The U.S. Justice Department has declined to comment on the case but have provided information regarding the Lacey Act, which is aimed at curbing illegal trafficking in wildlife, fish and plant products, and illegally obtained lumber. A letter issued by the Justice and Interior department officials stated the following:

“By prohibiting trafficking in wood illegally harvested overseas, the Lacey Act prohibits companies from undercutting law-abiding U.S. wood products companies … by trading in artificially inexpensive raw materials that have been illegally harvested from foreign forests.”

Gibson’s CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, states that Gibson Guitar uses a small fraction of the world’s tropical hardwoods, compared to that used for furniture and flooring, and because it uses so little it can use it sustainably. He also explained how his company has been a leader in this area with its line of SmartWood instruments, using wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. He went on to state:

“The issue here is not illegal logging or some conservation abuse … The laws that are being identified by the Department of Justice have to do with protectionism by the country of origin, keeping work in that country and therefore not allowing something that isn’t that value-added to be exported.”

Gibson has filed suit in federal court in Nashville to recover all of their seized materials, but that suit has been stayed while the investigation continues. In the meantime, Juszkiewicz has been working on changing the law. He says,

“I believe in the intent of the law … but I do believe that the way it’s currently written allows what’s happening to me to happen to other companies, and that’s wrong.”

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner invited Juszkiewicz to join him in the speaker’s box to watch President Barack Obama‘s address on jobs to joint session of Congress on September 8.

Oh, and in case you were wondering… Luckily for musicians, a letter from the government in response to members of Congress on the Gibson case stated that those who unknowingly possess an instrument containing wood that was taken illegally “do not have criminal exposure.”

In a move to bolster it’s market share in the online, on-demand music industry, Rhapsody has agreed to aquire Napster subscribers and certain other assets from Best Buy, which will receive a minority stake  in Rhapsody. Rhapsody President, Jon Irwin, said in a statement,

“This deal will further extend Rhapsody’s lead over our competitors in the growing on-demand music market…. There’s substantial value in bringing Napster’s subscribers and robust IP portfolio to Rhapsody as we execute on our strategy to expand our business via direct acquisition of members and distribution deals.”

A Rhapsody spokeswoman has also stated that the company plans to re-brand Napster under the Rhapsody name. So, pretty soon after the deal finalizes on November 30, 2011, Napster will cease to exist once again. Bye-bye, Napster. Bye-bye.

Rhapsody is doing this mostly to obtain Napster’s subscriber base, hoping that it will strengthen their subscription music service at a time with Apple’s iTunes dominating the music market and other music services rising like Oakland, CA’s Pandora and Sweden’s Spotify. Will this help enough to keep Rhapsody competitive and viable in the on-demand music marketplace in the coming years? We shall see.

Steve JobsSteve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computers has passed away today, October 5, 2011. While Steve was not directly associated with the music industry and never really considered himself in the industry, he has forever changed the face of it with his inventions of Apple computers, the iPod, iTunes, iPhone, iPad, and more. Through these innovations and technologies, Steve and Apple have been able to sell over 10 billion music tracks. This has made Apple the number one music retailer in the US, surpassing both Best Buy and Wal-Mart, and holding over 80% of the market share.

Today, the Apple website posted the following message:

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

RIP, Steve Jobs. You will be missed.
