The Weeknd has been confirmed to play Coachella 2012, possibly his first show in the United States.

There is perhaps no better case study of the Internet’s star-making capabilities than the career arc of Toronto’s Abel Tesfaye, better known to us as The Weeknd. Beginning with House of Balloons in March 2011, Tesfaye unleashed 3 mixtapes that circulated like wild fire, thanks to a public endorsement by Drake along the way. One year later, The Weeknd have been confirmed to appear at Coachella 2012, slated for April 13-15 and 20-22 in Indio, CA.

Remarkably, one of the biggest festivals in the US could also be his first ever show in the country. Tesfaye has performed in his hometown of Toronto, but has yet to play a show on American soil. Talk about setting a high standard – it’ll be a long time before he plays for a U.S. crowd larger than his first one.

Coachella is trickling out its 2012 lineup announcement this week, with the first…

At The Drive-In have reunited to release This Station Is Non-Operational

At The Drive-In surprised us today with an out-of-the-blue tweet announcing their reunion in 2012. It simply read: “¡ ATTENTION ! To whom it may concern: AT THE DRIVE-IN will be breaking their 11 year silence THIS STATION IS …NOW…OPERATIONAL”

After the news broke, ATDI’s official site broke under heavy traffic, but Fearless records reveals some information about their return. On May 24th, 2012, the band will release This Station Is Non-Operational, an 18-song compilation bundled with covers, BBC sessions, B-sides and a DVD of music videos and other footage compiled over the band’s 9-year history. 30-second clips and a promo landing page are on display at Fearless’ website.

ATDI have not yet announced tour plans, but with Coachella rolling out its lineup announcement, it’s fun to speculate they may show up at the festival this year. Coachella has a reputation for prompting major reunions on an annual…

Why do we go out to concerts? Most people go to hear a band they like. For some it’s an activity just to get them out of their house. And for others they have no choice because their “friend” drags them out–and that’s cool too. We often write about bands music fans would want to see, and certainly, not everyone is that particular. So in the next few weeks we plan to showcase venues that fans can enjoy for more than just the music. Here’s our guide to venues for the casual music fans.

The Boom Boom Room

1601 Fillmore Street  San Francisco, CA 94115

Opened by the legendary John Lee Hooker, who named the venue after his most successful hit song “Boom Boom,” at the Boom Boom Room you might hear some blues–but you’re more likely to get swept up onto the dance floor. This isn’t a sit down or head…

Starting Next Week, Spotify No Longer Free

Spotify will no longer be free.

We know: it’s the worst headline you’ve read all week. But it’s true: Spotify is pulling the rug out from under its free listeners.

Six months ago, the music streaming service made its US debut and quickly gained traction as the Internet’s preferred streaming / discovery service du jour, dwarfing contributions from other players like Pandora, MOG and Rdio. But that may change when the service hits its half-year anniversary this week. That’s when most free users will discover their previously unlimited, ad-supported listening privileges will be replaced with a 10-hour per month limit on free streaming (including a 5-play limit on any single song in Spotify’s archives).

Why the change? BBC News speculates Spotify is under pressure from record labels who see next to nothing in streaming revenue from free users (who comprise 85% of the site’s user base). Labels may be getting antsy that they’ve…

Van Halen Tour Dates 2012

It’s official, Van Halen and David Lee Roth will begin their 45-stop 2012 tour in support of their new album, A Different Kind of Truth,   on February 18th in Louisville, Kentucky. This the first album the duo have recorded since 1984, though they’ve toured together in 2007 and 2008. With Roth and Hagar reunited, the final missing link, bassist Michael Anthony, isn’t expected to return thanks to the prowess of his replacement , Wolfgang Van Halen, better known as Halen’s son. According to the press release, the group will play several new songs accompanied by favorable tunes like “Eruption,” “Running With the Devil,” “Hot for Teacher,” and more.

And if the combo of Halen and Roth didn’t get you hot and bothered enough, Kool & the Gang will be opening for the band on select dates. Now let’s get a celebration for partying like it’s the 80s all…

Phil Lesh is opening a restaurant / concert venue in San Rafael, CA

The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh is finally moving forward on plans to open Terrapin Crossroads, a restaurant / concert venue slated to open next month in San Rafael, CA’s Canal District. The venue’s new website outlines the philosophical backbone supporting the establishment:

As we got deeper into it, it morphed into something more comprehensive: a community cultural and educational center. We plan to celebrate the arts – music, culinary, poetry, dance, literature, visual arts including photography, theatre, and other creative endeavors – so aside from a performance space and restaurant, Terrapin Crossroads will also host art exhibits, have an art-and-music-themed library and reading room, memorabilia displays, and a beautiful, comfortable place where friends can meet to exchange ideas over a glass of wine or a drink, a terrific meal, and of course hear some great music.

We’ll also be a place for teaching and learning: in addition to regular musical…

Van Halen will tour with David Lee Roth in 2012.

Reignite the David Lee Roth vs. Sammy Hagar debate! Roth has announced he will rejoin Van Halen for a 40th anniversary tour and a new album on Interscope Records in 2012. The tour reveal was posted on the band’s official website today. No specific dates have been announced yet, but we’ll get them shortly – we already know tickets go on sale January 10th, thanks to this black-and-white confetti-laden promo video:

New Orleans Jazz Festival 2012 with Eagles, Foo Fighters, John Mayer, Tom Petty

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will feature The Eagles, Tom Petty, The Foo Fighters, and John Mayer among the hundreds of acts playing the festival in 2012. The party goes down across two weekends from April 27th to May 6th, and will be spread over a dozen (or so) stages.

With so much talent loaded onto this bill, it’s impossible to pinpoint just a couple featured acts. Al Green, Bon Iver, Herbie Hancock, My Morning Jacket, Iron & Wine, Feist, Florence + the Machine, and Jill Scott are all deserving festival headliners in their own right, but they represent just a fraction of the nationally recognized talent on this year’s packed festival lineup.

Festival producer Quint Davis said of landing The Eagles and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers:

They’ve been on our most in demand list for…

Happy Holidaze and “Stay High!”

Well, it is finally here. Apple‘s online cloud music storage is here to compete with services from Amazon and Google. Now, for $24.99 per year, Apple will scan your computer and match as many tracks as they can to their iTunes Store library. Once a track is matched it becomes available to every device that is synced with your Apple iCloud account. iTunes Match also automatically upgrades all lower quality tracks you may have to 256-Kbps quality. A pretty nice upgrade for those of  you who have really old 128-Kbps tracks from the early days of Napster and other music sharing services.

The main advantage iTunes Match has over other music cloud services right now is probably the fact that when you sign up with the service you don’t have to upload your whole music library contents to their servers. This is due to the fact that Apple has been able to sign agreements with major music labels which permits them to simply match your tracks against their own extensive music library. This saves everyone a lot of time and bandwidth when setting up and maintaining the service.

To use iTunes Match, first download the latest version of iTunes. Then, open up the Store sidebar, where you’ll find the iTunes Match feature. After paying for the service, Match will index your music and match as many tracks as it can with Apple’s library. After everything is matched, you can enable the feature on all your other iOS devices by going to the “Music” tab in the devices Settings. Slide iTunes Match to “on,” and you should be good to go. Your iOS device will begin syncing your music and playlists; and songs will download to your device as you play them.
