Love Femi Kuti and his father’s work.

Femi Kuti plays "Africa for Africa" for La Blogotheque.

We’ve been keeping our watchful eye on the Grammys, because for every snub (Kanye’sMBDTF??) and bunk nomination (Bruno Mars??), there are stories of well-deserved recognition that straight up warm our hearts. For his underdog Album of the Year nomination, Bon Iver becomes this year’s Arcade Fire, right down to the hilarious reaction blog that pays homage to the original.

On a more serious, less Internet-A.D.D.-related note: we’re also stoked on Femi Kuti’sAfrica for Africa, nominated for best world music album at the 2012 Grammys. Femi carries the torch for his father, Fela Kuti, an innovator and a figurehead for Afrobeat music as well as a dedicated political activist. We were recently directed toward this excellent performance of “Africa for Africa,” filmed by La Blogotheque on a rooftop in Paris. It’s an excellent introduction to Femi’s passionate approach to politics in…

The inimitable Shepard Fairey, founder and creative mind behind the Obey brand, is responsible for Noise Pop’s graphic design this year, which can only mean one thing: the 20th anniversary Noise Pop merch will be incredible.

Apparently, for three years multiple government agencies from around the world could have been hopping on your computer and seeing what you were up to. Yup, it appears that a British company called Gamma International had been marketing software called, FinFisher, which has been used to hack into machines running Apple’s iTunes.

Gamma International say they offer “zero day” security flaws, which have not been publicly disclosed, so attempts to exploit them are unlikely to be detected by anti-virus programs. They created the FinFisher software to exploit a vulnerability via a bogus update to iTunes, which is installed on more than 250 million machines worldwide. They then marketed this software to government and police agencies all around the world, including Egypt’s feared secret police, to spy on specific targets within the general public.

The crazy thing is that Apple was informed of the flaw in their iTunes software three years ago, in mid-2008. Seeing that Apple usually fixes security flaws within about 90 days, it raises questions as to whether Apple was willingly allowing this government hacking to take place or not. Seems that the hacking has been stopped for now though. Recently, Apple issued iTunes update 10.5.1. This update explained that, “a man-in-the-middle attacker may offer software that appears to originate from Apple”, adding that the “issue has been mitigated.” We’ll see.

I’m just glad that I have recently started using Spotify more!

This might pay for my dinner one night!

Ticketmaster

You read that right: if you purchased any ticket from Ticketmaster between the dates of October 21, 1999 and October 19, 2011, you’re entitled to a retroactive refund of $1.50 per ticket. If Ramen is your main dietary staple, congrats! You won’t go hungry for another week.

The news comes from a class-action lawsuit filed against Ticketmaster for deceptive practices (shocking!), profiting off of “processing fees” which were misrepresented to customers. Ticketmaster also got knocked for shady hikes to UPS express delivery charges, a subclass of the suit which rewards you with a cool $5 per ticket on your past orders that were shipped via UPS Express. Both refunds come in the form of vouchers redeemable against future orders (max two per order).

Full information, including eligibility and redemption procedures, can be found on the Ticketmaster Refund Litigation site. You’ll have to be a little bit patient, though – refunds won’t…

Worst Grammy Performances Ever

The Grammys wouldn’t be the Grammys without the pressure to perform, and sometimes artists just can’t make the cut. Since we’ve already shown you the best Grammys performances ever, we couldn’t leave the juicy, or in the case of Pink, wet, performances that made everyone else look AMAZING. Without further adieu, the worst performances available to those that dare on Youtube.

Outkast: “Hey Ya”

“Hey Ya” was 2004’s summer ubiquitous hit. You couldn’t escape it, and why would you want to? This was such a terrible let down. The strange, albeit slightly racist costumes, and poor singing made this a forgettable (hopefully) performance that stands as an example of what NOT to do.

Pink: “Glitter In The Air”

After this performance, which truly lived up the spectacle of the Grammys, critics joked that the song title should have been changed to “Water On Your Face.” Take a look…
