Kanye West at Victoria Secret Fashion Show 2011

Kanye West performed “Stronger” at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2011 last night, four years after he backed out of the 2007 show in dealing with the loss of his mother.

The sentiment is nice, but the presentation is woefully awkward. Kanye: “I love my dead mother so much, I’m gonna rap to these supermodels.”

The performance may have come four years late, but it was plenty dope. Note that even Kanye can’t peel his eyes away around 1:50. Watch it below:

Hurricane Katrina, Taylor Swift at the VMAs, and now Victoria’s Secret Models – Ye’s upstaged them all. He has such a knack for soapboxing at the wrong moment – would his mother approve?

Elvis Costello

Costello performing at Glastonbury in 2005

Well, it’s the holiday season, and people are out purchasing gifts for themselves and others. It is the perfect time for CD box sets to come out, which is why Universal Music Enterprises has released Costello’s box set, “Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook.” The box set includes three CDs, a vinyl record, a concert DVD and a 40-page coffee table book; but it costs $225. Costello says that this amount of money is a “hoax” and recommends that if fans really want certain parts of the box set they should just wait until after the holidays when they might be able to purchase individual items separately. He also went on to explain that he tried to get the record label to lower the price, but they would not budge. So, he actually ended up recommending another artist’s works for the holiday season, releasing the following statements:

“Unfortunately, we at www.elviscostello.com find ourselves unable to recommend this lovely item to you as the price appears to be either a misprint or a satire…. If you should really want to buy something special for your loved one at this time of seasonal giving, we can whole-heartedly recommend, ‘Ambassador of Jazz‘ — a cute little imitation suitcase, covered in travel stickers and embossed with the name ‘Satchmo’ but more importantly containing TEN re-mastered albums by one of the most beautiful and loving revolutionaries who ever lived – Louis Armstrong. The box should be available for under one hundred and fifty American dollars and includes a number of other tricks and treats. Frankly, the music is vastly superior.”

Bravo, Elvis. Well done. However, if fans still wish to purchase the whole Costello box set, Music Sumo would like you all to know that you will be able to find it cheaper on Amazon. Starting December 6th, you should be able to find it for about $202, here. There’s a little gift of savings for you from Music Sumo!

Grammy Nominations 2012

The 2012 Grammy nominations will be announced tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov. 30th), a moment we’re sure you’ve been waiting for. Often the winners or even the nominees are rather predictable, with the exception of Lady Antebellum winning the record of year last year (are you a fan? tell us why? we really had never heard of her prior). And rather than engage in the hoopla of “Will Adele be nominated for every award?” (because duh, of course she will – 21 was amazing), we’ve decided to look back at the past performances at the Grammys.

We can’t declare these the best performances ever since Youtubers don’t seem to represent a demographic that has or is concerned with the Grammys pre-1980—tougher to find those videos than, say, Justin Bieber’s performance with Jaden Smith and Usher (which was readily available).

As we considered and compiled our top performances, we had to consider the magnitude…

Justice interview at the Creators Project in New York.

Justice will launch a 2012 US tour in support of Audio, Video, Disco, the followup to their 2007 Grammy-nominated debut, . It’s their first tour in two years, but if it seems like it’s been awhile, remember what they told us when we interviewed them at the Creators Project last month: “When you make a record, it doesn’t matter if it took four years or four month or weeks to make. What matters…is just if it’s good.”

They’ve had two years since the last round of shows to “make it good,” so expect a spectacular, finely-tuned display when the show finds its way Stateside in March.

03-16 New York, NY – Terminal 5
03-17 New York, NY – Terminal 5
03-19 Boston, MA – House of Blues
03-20 Philadelphia, PA – Electric Factory
03-21 Washington, D.C. – 9:30 Club

FUGAZI!!!

Fugazi will reveal an archive of 800 live shows from 1987 to 2003.

Though Fugazi have been on extended hiatus since 2003, their rabid fanbase follows the band with no less passion: just last year my roommate told me, in an only-half-joking tone, “the only thing I listen to anymore is NPR and Fugazi.”

The punk band’s loyal following will be thrilled to learn that the Fugazi Live Series, a massive archive of Fugazi shows spanning from 1987 to 2003, will launch to the public on December 1st. 130 videos will be available at launch, with a whopping 800 to be posted in the archive when all is said and done. That’s an average of 50 shows a year, for any current artists taking notes on how to carry themselves like total badasses (remember, 800 doesn’t even count the ones they didn’t record).

As is fashionable these days, you can preview a show for free and download it through a pay-what-you-want scheme…

Yeah, it’s a little early to announce, but ya gotta love Grandmaster Flash’s, “The Message!”

Can’t wait!

Grandmaster Flash will perform "The Message" with Common, Lupe Fiasco and LL Cool J at The Grammys 2012 Award Nomination Ceremony.

The Grammy Awards are slated for February 12th, 2012, but the fine folks at the Grammy Foundation are already doing their part to get the hype rolling. (If you’re one of those people that thinks October is way too early for Christmas ads and decorations, you might want to skip this one.)

Common, Lupe Fiasco, Rick Ross and LL Cool J will join Grandmaster Flash – known as Godfather of Hip Hop for his influence on the genre’s roots – for a special live performance of “The Message” at the Grammy Nomination Concert on November 30. The iconic track established hip hop as a valuable platform to raise awareness of the poverty, violence and drug problems present in inner-city ghettos.

For its impact on the genre, “The Message” will see induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame, plus this special cross-generational performance on Wednesday night’s Grammy Nomination ceremony.

Michelle BachmannSeems that The Roots don’t like Michelle Bachmann too much. The other morning on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann was on the show to be interviewed. The most talked about thing after the show was not her interview though, it was what The Roots decided to play as she walked out. As Bachmann walked out from behind the curtain The Roots distinctly broke into the classic Fishbone song, “Lyin’ Ass Bitch.”

The Roots often make sly, witty, and often pretty obscure song choices for the guests of the show. “Lyin’ Ass Bitch” is not a political song and is really about a bad relationship, but I think that this one has to be one of their best song choices yet.

Yesterday, I found this post from the wonderful guys at Thrillcall talking about Katy Perry possibly being pregnant. Seems that Katy might have mentioned something at a recent show at Madison Square Garden and she has also been showing a little bit of a bulge. With these recent reports popping up, Katy took the chance to set the record straight while on the red carpet at the American Music Awards by stating,

“I still love drinking alcohol so not yet…. I like In-N-Out Burger and Taco Bell and if you want to make that pregnant that’s your problem.”

I’m still not totally convinced though. Even if she was pregnant she might not want to admit it right away, and she can play off the eating and drinking story a little too easily. I think there might be more to come. We’ll see in a few months I guess.

Headless Gaga… Nice.

Lady Gaga performed headless on X-Factor UK.

“Marry the Night” is Lady Gaga’s 5th single off her massively successful album, Born This Way. And should you ever get the notion Gaga’s well of crazy fashion ideas has dried up, well, you underestimate her capacity for crazy fashion ideas. Here she is performing “Marry the Night” on X-Factor UK – headless.

Wow.

Lady Gaga, who never rests because she is a cyborg, is on tour right now – hit the link to buy tickets and track future shows on Thrillcall.

Avenged Sevenfold will play a free show at HP Pavillion and tour in 2011.

Avenged Sevenfold have announced 2011 tour dates, including a FREE show on December 16th, 2011 at HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. The free show atones for their cancelled performance at Live 105’s Uproar Festival in Mountain View, CA last month – those previously bummed out fans will be able to exchange their Uproar passes for priority tickets to this show, which guarantees first entry to the venue and first choice of seats. Your window for making the swap and securing those priority passes is small, though: you have until 11/23/11 at midnight PST to claim your exchange. After that, you get relegated in with the rest of the plebes trying to get their hands on these tickets.

However – and this is where we really commend the band for going above and beyond – even if you never had a ticket to Uproar, you’re still invited to the free…
