John K. Samson

One of my favorite singer-songwriters, John K. Samson of The Weakerthans, will be releasing a new album very soon. His first full length solo album, entitled Provincial, is set to debut this January 24th via Epitaph-Anti Records. The release will contain re-recorded tracks from Samson’s pair of solo EPs (City Route 85 and Provincial Road 222) as well as brand new songs. A preview video for the release as well as Samson’s upcoming tour dates can be seen below.

3/10 – Boston, MA at Brighton Music Hall
3/11 – Philadelphia, PA at Union Transfer
3/13 – Washington DC at Black Cat
3/15 – New York, NY at Bowery Ballroom
3/16 – Pittsburgh, PA at Club Cafe
3/17 – Buffalo, NY at Mohawk
4/1 – Seattle,WA at Tractor Tavern
4/2 – Portland, OR at Doug Fir
4/5 – San Diego, CA at The Casbah
4/6 – Los Angeles, CA at The Troubadour

For the totally geeky, like me, the liner notes can be found, here. I really do like John K. Samson’s music and can’t wait to see him in San Francisco. Hope to see some of you there!

Red Hot Chili Peppers rescheduled their 2012 tour dates in North America.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been forced to reschedule their 2012 tour after frontman Anthony Kiedis injured his foot and underwent surgery to remove a “crushed sesamoid bone and correct a detached flexor tendon.” Ouch…makes me cringe just reading it.

Tickets to the old dates will still be honored for the new shows. They’ll also be recording these performances for their tour archive, which we had mixed feelings about last month.

Below is their updated schedule, with the old dates listed before the rescheduled dates.

Old — New

01/20 — 04/02 – Sunrise, FL – Bank Atlantic Center*
01/21 — 03/31 – Orlando, FL – Amway Arena*
01/23 — 03/29 – St. Petersburg, FL – St. Pete Times Forum
01/25 — 04/06 – Charlotte, NC – Time Warner Cable Arena
01/27 — 04/04 – Raleigh, NC – RBC Center*
01/28 — 04/07 – Columbia, SC – Colonial Life Arena*

The Shins have announced an ever-so-slight tease of their tour schedule for 2012. In addition to their appearance at Coachella, they’ve scheduled four shows in close proximity on the West Coast in the middle of April. This makes them eligible for Fauxchella 2012, our list of Coachella artists making detours to play in the SF Bay Area (over 30 of ’em – well worth a look).

Tickets are on sale for the individual dates:

4/13/12 Las Vegas, NV Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas – The Pool
4/14/12 Indio, CA – Coachella 2012
4/21/12 Indio, CA – Coachella 2012
4/22/12 Santa Cruz, CA – Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium
4/23/12 Davis, CA – Robert Mondavi Center
4/25/12 Reno, NV – Grand Sierra Resort & Casino

Watch the Shins do their part to shape the next generation of musically enlightened kids by performing “It’s Ok Try Again” on Yo Gabba Gabba:

Flaming Lips will headline Noise Pop 2012.

Noise Pop 2012 has revealed another chunk of their lineup today, including a huge headliner with Noise Pop history: The Flaming Lips. They’ll join Cursive and Built to Spill as the headliners for the special 20th anniversary edition of the multi-venue San Francisco festival. Sleigh Bells, Bob Mould and The Fresh & Onlys are among the other names announced today.

The Flaming Lips will play the entirety of their album “The Soft Bulletin” on February 21st, 2012 at Bimbo’s 365 Club, with Release the Sunbird opening in support. Tickets are $50 and will go on sale January 15, 2012 at 10am PST. Festival badges which include entry to the Flaming Lips show will go on sale at 11am.

The band is a fitting addition to Noise Pop’s already-juiced 20th anniversary lineup. The act played Noise Pop in 2006 and, long before they were the weird colorful geniuses…

Rodrigo y Gabriela will go back on the road to support their new album, Area 52, due out January 23rd, 2012. The album represents the first time the couple with the dueling guitars has enlisted the help of other musicians for their records – C.U.B.A., a 13-piece Cuban orchestra, features on the upcoming release. Says Rodrigo:

“The album is called Area 52 because we felt like Mulder and Scully approaching this—it was just a crazy idea, to see if a big Cuban band could play our music, a step in the dark. We knew it was out there, everyone has heard of Area 51, but we wanted to take it a little further.”

Rodrigo y Gabriela’s 2012 tour dates (buy tickets):

4/03 – Seattle, WA – The Paramount Theatre
4/04 – Portland, OR – Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
4/05 – Oakland, CA – The Fox Theatre

Snoop Dogg was busted for marijuana at the Texas border.

Yesterday, Snoop Dogg appeared next to Dr. Dre on the 2012 Coachella lineup, to the delight of everyone on the West Coast who was alive and capable of listening to music in the 90s. As the AP reports, Snoop himself appeared somewhere else yesterday: the Sierra Blanca border checkpoint in Texas, where border agents busted his van for possession of about 2 ounces of marijuana.

Snoop received a misdemeanor citation for possession which could potentially carry up to 180 days in prison and prompt a mass of Coachella attendees pouring one out for the homie behind bars. But there’s no real reason for alarm: most cases get off with a $500 mail-in fine, and we have very little doubt Snoop’s got that one covered.

Snoop should be back sipping gin and juice in California soon, where he’ll be in no danger of getting hassled before the festival. Snoop…

Killswitch Engage want you to become their new singer.

Are you a Killswitch Engage fan? Do you have working vocal chords? Congratulations, you are pre-qualified to become Killswitch Engage’s next lead singer! After the departure of Howard Jones left the band frontman position vacant, rumors swirled (and they still might be true) that Jesse Leach, the group’s original frontman, could rejoin the band.

Last night, though, the band have decided to open lead singer auditions to the public. They put the call for demo tapes on their Facebook page:

We’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about the KsE singer position. If you are interested, please send an MP3 or a song link, a photo and a brief description of yourself to the management email address provided in the contact section of killswitchengage.com. thanks KsE

For the lazy, that’s strongmanagement@stronghq.com. Fair warning: you may need to beat out Leach’s audition, so bring your A game.
