noise-pop-2012-poster

Noise Pop celebrates its 20th birthday in 2012, and its lineup once again features the expert curation of fresh-faced artists that we’ve come to expect: Die AntwoordBleachedGrimes and oOoOO are among the names that hit the scene recently and started making waves in a hurry. But there’s a hidden story in Noise Pop’s 2012 lineup – a slick tribute, on this notable anniversary, to its rich 20-year history of highlighting these acts on the rise. One need only look to the veterans returning to the festival’s lineup for 2012.

Of course, there’s headliner Flaming Lips, whose “Boombox Experiment” at Noise Pop 1998 provided a glimpse of the band that would establish themselves the kings of psychedelia in the following years. Archers of Loaf played Noise Pop in 1997. Imperial Teen, 1999. Built to Spill, while not technically Noise Pop alums, have been around longer…

Cypress Hill Smokeout - complete lineup

Danny Brown, Mobb Deep and MSTRKRFT are among the final round of artists added to the bill for the Cypress Hill Smokeout, which takes place March 6th, 2012 in San Bernandino, CA. They’ll join headliners Sublime with Rome, Korn and Wiz Khalifa at the day-long festival and marijuana advocacy expo.

This is the last round of lineup announcements out of Guerilla Union’s camp, so the poster above represents the complete 2012 lineup (with the promise of “surprise performances,” of course). It was also revealed that the previously billed Low End Theory set – the party at the heart of LA’s experimental hip-hop scene – will be occupying its very own stage, with founding crew Daddy Kev, Nobody, Gaslamp Killer, D-Styles and Nocando holding down the futurebeat scene the whole day through.

The event will also feature hemp and marijuana advocacy panels, trade shops and a…

Die Antwoord release a new video for "I Fink U Freeky"

Die Antwoord just released the new video for “I Fink U Freeky,” a week ahead of the release of TEN$ION on February 7th, 2012. By now, Die Antwoord videos should come with a big neon sign that says “WARNING! Major freaky steez ahead!!,” because if you expected anything other than rats crawling around on Yolandi Visser’s body while she raps about how freeky U R, you don’t know what this group’s all about. Which is to say: this is probably NSFW, and definitely not safe for the easily squeamed.

Watch the video for “I Fink U Freeky”:

Following their album’s Feb. 7th release date, they’ll jump out on a month-long North American tour. That includes an appearance at Noise Pop 2012 in San Francisco, where we picked them as our Wednesday show of choice in our daily guide to the festival.

02/09/12 – Philadelphia, PA – Trocadero Theatre
02/10/12 – Boston, MA –…
